About the Item

Antique lithograph of Chinese figures, Brodtmann 1827 This original 1827 lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann depicts three Chinese figures in traditional attire, finely rendered with his distinctive ethnographic precision. Brodtmann (1787–1862), a Swiss lithographer celebrated for his natural history and ethnographic works, produced a remarkable series of world peoples during the early 19th century, combining scientific observation with artistic elegance. The composition shows a woman and two men, all dressed in detailed robes and garments. The woman holds a fan and wears an elaborate headdress, while the men are shown in flowing layered clothing with embroidered patterns. Such depictions reflect the European fascination with China during this period, when travel accounts and illustrations helped introduce faraway cultures to Western audiences. Brodtmann’s ethnographic lithographs were among the first attempts to systematically document the physiognomy and attire of different peoples from around the globe. Printed on thick, high-quality paper, the plates remain vivid almost two centuries later, demonstrating his mastery of tonal shading and compositional balance. Today, these works stand both as art and as valuable cultural records of 19th-century perceptions of Asia. Condition report: The print is in very good condition for its age, with a clear impression and strong paper. Light foxing and scattered toning in the margins, and a few faint waterstains at the edges, not affecting the central image. Framing tips: This lithograph will present beautifully in a simple black or dark wooden frame with a wide cream or ivory mat. The framing will highlight the delicate shading of the figures while giving the work a refined, gallery-quality presentation. Technique: Lithograph Maker: Karl Joseph Brodtmann, Switzerland, 1827
