About the Item

Antique medical engraving ‘Chirurgie, Achilles tendon devices’ by Diderot, 1760 This 18th-century engraving, Plate XXXIII from Denis Diderot’s monumental 'Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers', illustrates surgical instruments and orthopedic devices designed for the treatment of the Achilles tendon. The detailed composition shows both the anatomical application—an articulated leg with straps and braces—and separate renderings of individual tools, including clamps, braces, and supports. Diderot’s Encyclopédie*(1751–1772) was the most ambitious publishing project of the Enlightenment, bringing together the leading intellectuals of the age, including d’Alembert, Voltaire, and Rousseau. Its engravings, numbering over 2,500 plates, were central to its purpose: to record, systematize, and disseminate human knowledge in every field. The surgical plates, such as the present example, are valued today for their rare documentation of 18th-century medical practice and for their precise visual language that bridges art and science. The depiction of Achilles tendon treatment devices offers a fascinating glimpse into early orthopedics, a discipline still in its formative years. The ingenuity of the braces and supports reflects both practical experimentation and Enlightenment optimism about rational solutions to human ailments. Collectors of medical history, surgical instruments, and early biomechanics will find this print of particular interest. Condition report: Good impression with plate mark visible. Light toning and faint handling marks in the margins, image area clean. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: A simple black or dark wood frame with an off-white or ivory matting highlights the engraving’s technical precision. For a more scholarly presentation, a double mat with a thin charcoal border emphasizes the Enlightenment character of the plate. Technique: Engraving Maker: Denis Diderot, France, c. 1760
