About the Item
Antique Military Satire Prints – Swiss Citizen Soldiers – Düsseldorf, c.1850
This pair of (unframed) lithographs offers a humorous and satirical view of the Helvetian citizen-soldier system, capturing the clumsy and sometimes farcical side of military life. Published in Düsseldorf by Arnz
Comp., these prints were part of the popular illustrated periodical Düsseldorfer Monathefte, known for its sharp observations of politics, society, and culture in the mid-nineteenth century.
The first lithograph, titled “Scizzen aus Helvetiens Bürgersoldaten-Wesen” (Sketches from the Swiss Citizen-Soldier System), depicts artillerymen in disarray. One soldier, reclining on the ground, appears injured or unwilling to continue, while another explains to the officer that they wish to resign because “there is something rotten in our military system.” In the background, artillery wagons roll past in confusion, reinforcing the satirical message of disorganization.
The second print continues the theme with two infantrymen in the field. One soldier, still loading his musket, asks his sergeant for help, while the sergeant fires prematurely, causing the comical recoil to hit him in the face. The dialogue below reinforces the humor: the soldier admits his weapon is not yet ready, as there are still six shots loaded in it—turning a serious military exercise into a farce.
These prints reflect the 19th-century popularity of illustrated satire across Europe, in which humor was used to comment on national identity, the effectiveness of militias, and the realities of everyday service. While poking fun at Swiss military organization, the images also mirror wider European skepticism about citizen militias versus professional armies in an era of political upheaval and reform.
Condition summary: Both lithographs are in good condition, with clear impressions.. Minor brownish toning and a few age-related spots are visible, but the sheets remain strong with wide margins intact. No major tears or repairs noted. Unframed.
Framing tips: As a pair, these satirical military scenes should be kept together for maximum effect. Simple black or walnut frames with light ivory mounts will emphasize the sharp lines of the lithographs. For a more period look, gilt frames can enhance the mid-19th-century character.
