About the Item
Antique Nut
Tree Botanical Chromolithographs, Walnut
Chestnut, Calwer 1854
This elegant set of two original mid-19th century botanical chromolithographs was published in Stuttgart in 1854 under the direction of Dr. Calwer*The plates depict nut-bearing trees, including walnut and chestnut, shown with fruit, leaves, blossoms, catkins, and botanical details arranged in carefully balanced compositions.
NOTE: The prints are offered unframed, allowing the buyer full freedom of framing choice.
Each sheet presents a complete botanical study, combining mature fruits with cross-sections, flowering elements, and foliage. The walnut plate features richly modeled green fruits with interior structure, while the chestnut plate displays spiny husks, nuts, and elongated serrated leaves. The compositions are both informative and decorative, reflecting the period’s emphasis on scientific clarity paired with visual refinement.
Printed using early chromolithographic techniques, the plates exhibit subtle color layering and tonal depth achieved through multiple stones. This method produces softly modeled forms and a tactile surface quality that bridges natural history illustration and decorative wall art. The restrained backgrounds and generous margins give the imagery space to breathe and make the prints particularly suitable for framing.
The sheets show visible signs of historical handling, including surface soiling and light dirt, most noticeable in the margins and lighter background areas. This wear is consistent with mid-19th century use and storage and has not been cleaned or restored. These traces of age contribute to the authentic patina and surface character of the prints, reinforcing their originality and period integrity. The botanical imagery itself remains strong, clear, and visually engaging.
As a pair, these plates form a refined and intellectually grounded ensemble, well suited to libraries, studies, dining rooms, kitchens, or hospitality interiors. Tree and nut subjects from this period are less commonly encountered than fruit or flower plates, adding to the appeal for collectors and interior designers seeking botanical material with depth and variation.
Condition report:
Good antique condition. Visible handling dirt and surface soiling, primarily in the margins and lighter background areas, consistent with age and historical handling. Light age toning and scattered foxing. Minor edge wear. No major tears or losses; imagery remains well preserved and vibrant.
Framing tips:
Recommended in matching dark walnut or stained oak frames with generous ivory or warm off-white mats to emphasize the botanical detail and unify the pair. Museum or UV-filtering glass advised. When matted and framed, the handling wear largely recedes and reads as gentle toning.
Technique: Chromolithography
Maker: Dr. Calwer, Stuttgart, 1854
