About the Item

Antique Onion and Leek Botanical Print, Kitchen Garden Study, 1852 Description This striking original hand-colored lithograph illustrates onions, leeks, and related alliums from Carl Gustav Calwer’s Landwirthschaftliche und technische Pflanzenkunde, published in Stuttgart in 1852. The plate shows bulbs, roots, stems, and flower heads with clear botanical precision. The bold vertical structure and rich green tones make this one of the most decorative kitchen-garden subjects in the series. Calwer’s careful rendering highlights both agricultural function and natural beauty, reflecting the importance of alliums in 19th-century European diets. This plate works exceptionally well as a standalone statement piece, particularly in kitchens, dining rooms, or restaurant interiors. Condition report Noticeable age toning with scattered foxing and minor edge wear. Strong original hand coloring. From a bound volume. Framing tips Frame singly with a wide neutral mat. Dark wood or black frames enhance contrast and depth. Technique: Hand-colored lithograph Maker: Carl Gustav Calwer, Stuttgart, 1852
