About the Item

Antique Oriental Jewelry Adornment Study from Maximilian in Bavaria, 1846 This exceptionally refined 19th-century Orientalist engraving presents an extensive and highly detailed study of Middle Eastern jewelry and personal adornment, documenting a wide range of earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, medallions, pendants, belts, tassels, chains, and ornamental fastenings. The plate is composed as a dense encyclopedic overview, with each object individually rendered and precisely numbered, transforming functional jewelry into a visually rich register of craftsmanship and cultural identity. The composition offers a remarkable survey of Islamic metalwork design from Egypt and the broader Middle East as observed during the expedition of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria. Delicate filigree earrings, heavy engraved bangles, multilayered necklaces, amuletic pendants, and elaborate tassel ornaments testify to the extraordinary diversity of decorative traditions in circulation during the first half of the 19th century. The balance between solid geometric forms and flowing chains creates a rhythmic visual structure across the entire sheet. This engraving originates from the important travel publication documenting the oriental journey of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, with drawings executed by Heinrich von Mayr and explanatory text by Dr. Sebastian Fischer. Von Mayr’s draftsmanship is here at its most meticulous and controlled. Fine engraved lines capture hammered metal textures, chased ornament, granulation, and braided elements with remarkable clarity, demonstrating both artistic sensitivity and ethnographic precision. Historically, jewelry served not only as decoration but also as a marker of identity, status, regional affiliation, and spiritual belief. Many of the forms shown here relate to protective amulets, ceremonial ornaments, and traditional bridal adornment. This plate therefore functions as a rare visual archive of material culture at a moment just before industrial production began to alter traditional metalworking practices across the region. Artistically, the strength of the sheet lies in its symmetrical balance and ornamental density. Larger medallions and tassel pieces anchor the center of the composition, while lighter chains and earrings frame the entire display. The overall effect recalls a museum vitrine or cabinet of curiosities, making the plate both intellectually compelling and visually luxurious. Today, this work holds outstanding appeal for collectors of Orientalist art, Islamic decorative arts, jewelry history, and 19th-century travel illustration. It also performs beautifully as an interior statement piece in dressing rooms, libraries, fashion studios, galleries, and curated retail environments where craftsmanship and ornament are central visual themes. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light overall age-related toning and scattered foxing visible mainly in the margins and outer areas. Minor edge wear consistent with age. The engraved image itself remains crisp, finely detailed, and well-preserved. Faint plate impression visible. Framing tips: A wide ivory, parchment, or soft stone-colored mat will enhance the contrast and emphasize the ornamental richness of the design. A black, dark walnut, or softly antiqued gilt frame will give the piece a refined museum-quality presentation. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the delicate linework.
