About the Item

Antique Portrait Alexander Farnese – Spanish Netherlands Governor, c. 1750 This finely executed 18th-century etching portrays Alexander Farnese (1545–1592), Duke of Parma and Piacenza, one of the most brilliant military commanders of the Spanish Habsburgs during the late 16th century. The inscription beneath the portrait in Dutch identifies him as “Hartogh van Parma en Plaisance, Gouverneur Generaelen Veldtoverste in de Spaensche Nederlanden,” highlighting his title and role as Governor-General and military leader in the Spanish Netherlands. Alexander Farnese was a key figure in the Eighty Years' War. As Governor of the Spanish Netherlands (1578–1592), he led successful campaigns to reclaim rebellious provinces for the Spanish Crown, notably recapturing Antwerp in 1585. A skilled diplomat and strategist, he strengthened Habsburg control in Flanders and Brabant during a critical period of European religious and political upheaval. This portrait, engraved in the elegant 18th-century Dutch style and likely attributed to Jacobus Houbraken (1698–1780), depicts Farnese in ornate armor, adorned with the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an emblem of nobility and high honor. His ruff collar and detailed breastplate convey both Renaissance fashion and military authority. The composition is set within an architectural oval frame, emphasizing formality and distinction. Houbraken was known for his portraits of prominent historical figures, produced with remarkable precision and clarity. This etching is part of a broader tradition of historical portraiture that flourished in the Netherlands during the Enlightenment, aiming to educate and inspire through the legacies of great leaders. A compelling addition to any collection of historical portraiture, especially those focused on the Habsburg dynasty, military history, or the Low Countries. Condition: Strong impression with minor toning. Slight edge wear in the left margin. No tears or significant defects in the portret or text. Framing tips: A dark walnut or black frame with a soft ivory mat will highlight the armor detail and create a dignified presentation. Technique: Etching and engraving Maker: Attributed to Jacobus Houbraken, Amsterdam, c. 1750

Portrait of Carlos de Colonna, Marques de la Espinar
By Paulus Pontius
Located in Middletown, NY
(after Anthonie Van Dyck) Engraving on cream laid paper, 9 1/4 x 6 3/8 inches (234 x 161 mm), full margins. Water stain throughout bottom, diagonal creases in the area of the bottom right corner, paper tape along top edge on recto. A very well inked impression. __________Flemish painter and engraver Paulus Pontius was born in Antwerp in 1603, and it was in this city that his full life would unfold. At the young age of 13, he was apprenticed to the still life painter Osias Beert, and subsequently to Lucas Vosterman, who was heavily associated with the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens. Vosterman trained Pontius in the skill of engraving, which he took to immediately, finding he had great skill at recreating paintings. Pontius was able to capture the minutiae of light and shadow found on the canvas, and mastered the ability to accurately render the subtleties of brushwork in this alternate media. His success as an engraver cemented his role in the workshop of Rubens, and in 1624, when Vosterman found himself at odds with Rubens, and left Antwerp for England, Pontius assumed his role as foremost engraver in the workshop. It was in this year that Pontius took up lodgings in Rubens's home, and continued to live there until 1631, when courtship and marriage (the first of three) brought him away. After the death of Rubens in 1640, Pontius embarked on a very successful career engraving reproductions of master works by artists including Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Pieter van Avont, Abraham van Diepenbeeck...
