Antique Portrait Engraving of Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil, 1867
Impressive 19th-century portrait engraving of S.M. Dom Pedro II, Empereur du Brésil, published in 1867. The Emperor is depicted standing full-length in regal attire, wearing a richly embroidered ceremonial robe trimmed with ermine. A sash of state crosses his chest, and his right hand rests on a table beside the imperial crown, symbol of sovereignty. A heavy curtain forms the backdrop, emphasizing the grandeur of the scene.
Engraved by Nargeot and printed by Ch. Chardon, Paris, this portrait was part of a set of engravings devoted to Brazil, produced for a European readership fascinated by the South American empire. Dom Pedro II (1825–1891), the last Emperor of Brazil, reigned from 1831 until 1889. Revered as a progressive monarch, he promoted education, science, and the arts, and played a pivotal role in the abolition of slavery in Brazil. His reign is often considered a golden age in Brazilian history.
Condition: Very good, with mild toning and light foxing confined to the margins. The portrait impression is strong and crisp. Blank verso. Please study the image carefully.
Framing tips: A wide ivory or cream mat will highlight the engraving, while a gilt frame will emphasize its imperial character. Alternatively, a dark wood frame will add gravitas and provide strong contrast against the detailed line work.
