About the Item

Dutch West Indies Geology Fossils 1888 Scientific Lithograph Plates This rare matched pair of geological plates originates from the monumental 1888 scientific work Bericht über eine Reise nach Niederländisch West-Indien by Karl Martin, Professor of Geology at the University of Leiden. Published by the prestigious academic house of E. J. Brill in Leiden, these plates document fossil and rock formations observed during Martin’s extensive geological expedition through the Dutch West Indies (present-day Caribbean territories). The first plate illustrates a remarkable series of fossilized marine remains and geological fragments, including shells, teeth, and stratified rock sections, all meticulously rendered with scientific precision. Each specimen is isolated against a neutral background and individually numbered, reflecting the late 19th-century commitment to empirical observation and documentation. The second plate presents enlarged structural cross-sections and cellular formations of rocks and coral-like substrates, offering a microscopic glimpse into mineral composition and sediment layering. Together, the two plates form a visually balanced and intellectually rich geological pairing—equally appealing to collectors of scientific illustration, Caribbean history, colonial exploration material, and natural history prints. These images were produced during a pivotal era when European geological research was expanding rapidly through overseas exploration, and Martin’s work remains a cornerstone reference for Caribbean geology. The aesthetic is refined and understated, with soft tonal shading and precise line work that makes the plates highly suitable for both contemporary and classic interiors. Framed as a diptych, they create a striking intellectual statement wall set that bridges science, colonial history, and decorative art. Condition Report Both plates are in very good original condition for their age. Light and even age toning to the paper throughout. Minor scattered foxing visible, primarily in the outer margins. Clean image areas with strong clarity. No losses or repairs. Original plate margins intact. Framing Tips These plates frame beautifully as a matching pair in slim black, dark walnut, or brushed bronze frames. Use off-white or soft ivory museum mats to preserve the scientific character while enhancing contrast. Ideal presentation as a horizontal diptych in a study, library, or gallery wall.
