About the Item

Title: Chinese Religious Figures Catholic Clergy – Bernard Picart Engraving c.1720 This compelling early 18th-century engraving presents four contrasting religious figures, offering a rare European visual interpretation of Christianity and mendicant life in China. The composition shows, at upper left, a Catholic priest rendered according to Western clerical conventions; opposite him, a Chinese beggar-priest seated beneath a broad hat, holding a musical instrument. Below are two Chinese Catholic priests in long robes, and at lower right a Chinese beggar depicted with an elongated, pointed skull—an image reflecting early modern European curiosity about physical difference and cultural otherness. The print was engraved by Bernard Picart, one of the most influential illustrators of the Enlightenment. Trained in Paris, Picart relocated to Amsterdam in 1711, where he became central to the production of illustrated works documenting world religions, customs, and belief systems. His engravings are celebrated for their clarity, balance, and relatively sympathetic treatment of non-European cultures when compared to earlier, more fantastical representations. This image belongs to Picart’s broader visual project of explaining religious diversity to a European audience, closely aligned with the intellectual climate that produced works such as *Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde*. The figures are carefully differentiated by costume, posture, and attributes, emphasizing both cultural distinction and shared religious function. The juxtaposition of Catholic and Chinese religious figures underscores early 18th-century Europe’s growing engagement with missionary activity, global travel, and ethnographic observation. Beyond its historical value, the print is visually striking, with finely engraved lines, balanced spacing, and a calm, observational tone. It is of particular interest to collectors of early ethnography, missionary history, Enlightenment-era prints, and Bernard Picart’s work, as well as to institutions exploring cross-cultural representation in early modern Europe. Condition report: Light to moderate age toning consistent with early 18th-century paper. Scattered light foxing and faint surface spots. Plate impression visible. Margins intact with minor edge wear; no major tears or losses. Framing tips: This print benefits from a light cream or warm grey mat to soften the tone of the paper. A dark wood or black frame enhances contrast and highlights the fine engraved detail, suitable for both classical and contemporary interiors. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Bernard Picart, Paris / Amsterdam, c.1720
