Particular and interesting frame with a print depicting the Dutch doctor Herman Boerhaave; from the Latin inscription we deduce that the eighteenth-century character was a follower of Aesculapius (god of medicine in Roman and Greek mythology), then a doctor who died in 1738. The print is an etching from a drawing by J.Houbraken made by the engraver J.Wandelaar after the death of the illustrious doctor, between 1740 and 1745. Jacob Houbraken (Dordrecht, 25 December 1698 - Amsterdam, 14 November 1780) was a northern Dutch draftsman, engraver, and art collector; Jan Wandelaar ( Amsterdam, 14 April 1690 - Leiden, 26 March 1759 ), was an eighteenth-century painter, illustrator, and engraver from the northern Netherlands and Dr. Herman Boerhaave's fellow citizen. Herman Boerhaave was a doctor and scientist, born on December 31, 1668, in Voorhout near Leiden, and died in Leiden on September 23, 1738. He studied medicine and was also involved in botany and chemistry. Graduated in 1693 in Harderwijk, with a thesis in which he insisted on the need to carefully examine the sick, he settled in Leiden as a doctor. There he began teaching medicine in 1701 and chemistry in 1703; he was appointed full professor of medicine in 1709, charged with the teaching of botany shortly thereafter, and in 1718 was also given the chair of chemistry. His anatomical knowledge was based especially on his extensive readings, but, on the other hand, he gave a lot of weight to the observation of the sick and gave real clinical teaching to his students. His treatises enjoyed for a long time a great reputation, also for their clarity and precision. He had great honors throughout his life, his fame lived on thanks to his students, such as Haber and van Swieten. The frame that encloses the print is very special and unusual; it was made in recent times (1975-1980) by an old master craftsman who has his workshop (old too!) in the "coolest" district of Florence: San Frediano, known for the fascinating and unique "workshops" of artisans who produce with their own hands; the Master inserted four shiny mirror edges on the sides of the flat part, tilting them outwards, while he painted the inner edge with gold in order to create a very bright, refined and elegant optical effect. The frame with the print is a unique piece that has considerable historical value and at the same time an inimitable and sought-after piece of furniture. The print and the frame are in good condition. Measures width cm.46, height cm.55, depth cm.2, internal measures width cm.25, height cm.35. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
