About the Item
Apollo, Muses and Mythological Reliefs, Classical Antiquity Engraving, 1721
This detailed antiquarian engraving presents a carefully curated selection of mythological reliefs, statues, and ancient sculptural compositions associated with Apollo and the classical pantheon. Issued as part of Bernard de Montfaucon’s seminal work Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, published in 1721, the plate reflects the early Enlightenment ambition to systematically document and interpret the material culture of ancient Greece and Rome.
The composition is arranged as a scholarly visual anthology. At the top, reclining and seated mythological figures appear in relief-like settings, after celebrated antique marbles recorded in Roman collections such as those of the Maffei and Spon families. Circular medallion-format scenes depict idealized deities in motion, including flying and seated figures that evoke Apollo, Victory, and attendant divine personifications. To the right and center, domestic and ceremonial scenes unfold on couches and thrones, highlighting the classical language of repose, authority, and ritual.
The lower section is dominated by a dramatic and highly decorative relief of a mythological chariot procession, with multiple horses in full stride, guided by nude and semi-draped figures in a dynamic narrative scene. This long horizontal composition anchors the plate visually and underscores Montfaucon’s interest in comparing small-scale gems and medallions with monumental relief sculpture. Throughout, the engravings are rendered with clarity and restraint, prioritizing archaeological accuracy while remaining visually compelling.
Printed as a single-sheet copper engraving, this plate was intended as a reference image for scholars, artists, and collectors. Today it functions equally well as a decorative work, particularly appealing to collectors of classical mythology, early archaeology, and Grand Tour–era scholarship. Its balanced layout and varied imagery make it especially suitable for library walls, studies, or refined classical interiors.
Condition report: Original 18th-century impression on laid paper. Light overall toning consistent with age. Mild edge wear and soft corners. No major losses; image remains strong and well-defined.
Framing tips: A generous cream or ivory mat will allow the multiple scenes to breathe visually. Frame in walnut, dark oak, or antiqued gilt for a classical effect; a simple black frame also works well for a more contemporary interior.
