About the Item
This powerful group of five original woodcut prints originates from Oaxaca, Mexico and dates to the APPO protest era of approximately 2006–2010. Produced during, and shortly after the Oaxaca teachers’ strike and popular uprising, these prints exemplify the urgent, anonymous visual language developed by artists working within the APPO movement and the broader Oaxacan activist printmaking community.
Executed in bold relief printing, the imagery features skeletal figures, campesino and revolutionary iconography, and scenes of collective resistance—motifs commonly employed to communicate political solidarity, labor struggle, and social critique. One design appears twice, printed on different paper stocks, illustrating the handmade, non-editioned nature of protest-era print production and the emphasis on dissemination rather than fine-art exclusivity.
These works were intentionally left unsigned and were not editioned, consistent with activist print practices of the period where collective identity and rapid circulation took precedence over individual authorship. The group relates closely in style, scale, and subject matter to documented APPO-era works by Oaxaca-based printmakers active during this time.
Acquired in California from an Alameda-area auction, this group of 5 prints reflects the well-documented circulation of Oaxacan protest prints into the United States through activist, academic, and collector networks.
