About the Item

A 1928 color etching signed in pencil by Maurice de Becque for "Sonnica de Courtisane" by Vincente Blasco-Ibanez, this piece exhibits the stylized, moderne style we call Art Deco. Depicting three nude women in various stages of sleep and swoon in a shadowy foreground, the piece puts its spotlight on a classical statue of a nude male in the background. This gorgeous print makes use of a wide range of color: deep blacks, rich grays and gray-rose. De Becque was known for his Art Deco illustrations, including a book of letters by Montesquieu published in 1925.

Jean-Emile Buland studied under the painter Alexandre Cabanel and the engraver Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He won the 1st Grand Prix de Rome for engraving in 1880.
