About the Item

Austrian Officer and Infantryman of Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment, 1867 – Hand-Coloured Lithograph This 19th-century hand-coloured lithograph depicts an officer and an infantryman from the prestigious Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment of the Austro-Hungarian Army, dated 1867. Both men are shown in full dress uniform, featuring dark blue tunics, light blue trousers, and distinctive headgear adorned with plumes. The officer stands with a sword at his side and gloved hands, exuding formality, while the infantryman rests his hands on the muzzle of his rifle, bayonet fixed, with marching gear and a rolled cloak slung over his shoulder. The Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment, formally known as the k.u.k. Infanterie-Regiment Hoch- und Deutschmeister Nr. 4, was one of the most famous infantry units in the Habsburg military. With origins dating back to the 17th century, it carried a storied tradition and played a prominent ceremonial as well as operational role. This print captures a moment in its post-Austro-Prussian War history, a period of uniform refinement reflecting both function and parade elegance. Produced using the high-quality lithographic techniques of the k.k. Militär-Geographisches Institut, the image combines accuracy with artistic detail. The hand-applied colour brings out the regiment’s signature blue tones and the fine gold elements of the officer’s sash and cap trim. Condition report: Well-preserved impression with strong colour and minimal fading. Slight toning and a few faint spots in the margins, not affecting the image. Framing tips: A dark wood or black frame with a cream mount will enhance the blue and gold tones, giving the print a dignified presentation suitable for military history collections. Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph Maker: W. Tiemann, published by k.k. Militär-Geographisches Institut, Vienna, 1867
