About the Item
Badminton Player, H.N. Marrett, by Charles Ambrose.
A vintage badminton print of a caricature of H.N. Marrett by Charles Ambrose. Marrett was born in Umballa, India, and died there but he spent much of his life living in England. Henry Norman Marrett was a medical doctor by profession and a notable badminton and tennis player. In addition to his successes at lawn tennis, he won the men's singles title at the All England Badminton Championships in 1904, 1905 and 1908 (considered the unofficial World Badminton Championship). He competed at the 1904 Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships where he reached the second round before losing to Arthur Gore. He won two career singles titles at the Kent Coast Championships in 1903 held in Hythe, and the Essex Championships in 1920. He married fellow badminton player Florence Lannowe.
The badminton print was 'Supplement to Lawn Tennis
Badminton, April 3, 1907' and is in good condition.
Little is known of the British artist, Ambrose. He worked in oils, pen and ink and watercolours and was primarily an illustrator for the earlier magazines, illustrating personalities of the day, golfers, cricketers, croquet players and tennis players.
