About the Item

Bathsheba Bathing – Antique Hand-Coloured Engraving after Picart, 1727–1738 This striking hand-coloured engraving depicts the biblical scene of Bathsheba bathing, as described in II Samuel XI:2. Bathsheba, draped in a crimson cloth, is shown seated by a fountain with two attendants assisting her with garments, while King David observes from a rooftop in the background. The composition emphasizes both sensuality and moral warning, as the moment of Bathsheba’s beauty leads to David’s temptation and the dramatic consequences that follow in scripture. The print originates from the monumental work Naaukeurige beschryving der godtsdienst-plichten, kerk-zeden en gewoontens van alle volkeren der waereldt (1727–1738), the Dutch edition of Bernard Picart and Jean-Frédéric Bernard’s Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde (1723–1743). This vast, encyclopedic series illustrated religious rites, customs, and moral lessons from cultures around the globe, representing one of the most ambitious publishing projects of the early Enlightenment. An English edition appeared in 1733 under the title Ceremonies and Religious Rites of the Various Nations of the Known World. Bernard Picart (1673–1733), a Paris-born engraver who settled in Amsterdam, was among the most influential illustrators of the early eighteenth century. His collaboration with the publisher Jean-Frédéric Bernard resulted in one of the richest visual records of religious and moral imagery of the time. Prints such as this one exemplify Picart’s ability to combine fine engraving technique with powerful narrative and symbolism. Condition: Very good, with strong early hand-colouring. Some minor toning to margins and light handling traces consistent with age. Plate mark clearly visible. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: A gilt or gold-leaf frame will heighten the richness of the colouring and baroque composition, while a walnut or dark wood frame paired with a cream or lightly tinted mount will provide a more restrained, classical presentation. Technique: Hand-coloured engraving Maker: After Bernard Picart, Amsterdam, 1727–1738

Located in Langweer, NL
Antique religion print titled 'Susanna resisteth the temptation of the two Judges'. She said to her maids, "Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the garden doors so that I may bathe." When the maids had gone out, the two elders rose and ran to her, and said: "Look, the garden doors are shut, no one sees us, and we are in love with you; so give your consent, and lie with us. If you refuse, we will testify against you that a young man was with you, and this was why you sent your maids away." Susanna sighed deeply, and said, "I am hemmed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death for me; and if I do not, I shall not escape your hands. I choose not to do it and to fall into your hands, rather than to sin in the sight of the Lord."
