Antique Biblical Engravings – The Transfiguration of Christ
Healing of a Possessed Boy, ca. 1700
This striking engraving sheet, published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam around 1700, presents two dramatic moments from the Gospels, capturing both the majesty of divine revelation and the compassion of Christ’s healing power.
The upper scene depicts the Transfiguration of Christ (Matthew 17:1–9). Christ stands elevated on the mountain, radiant in glory, flanked by Moses and Elijah, while Peter, James, and John bow in awe at the brilliance of the vision. The engraver uses dramatic clouds and light to heighten the supernatural presence, emphasizing the revelation of Christ’s divine nature and His fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets.
The lower engraving illustrates the healing of a possessed boy (Matthew 17:14–18). At the forefront, the afflicted child is brought forward by his anguished father, while Christ stands with one hand raised in authority, commanding the demon to depart. The disciples and a surrounding crowd watch attentively, underscoring both the desperation of human suffering and the power of Christ to restore life and order. The background with palm trees and distant architecture lends the scene a classical grandeur.
Together, the two compositions juxtapose the heavenly majesty of Christ with His earthly ministry of mercy. They reflect the theological depth central to the Baroque vision of scripture: revelation is inseparable from compassion, and divine glory is revealed in acts of deliverance. Originally issued as part of Mortier’s grand illustrated Bible, these engravings were intended for meditation as well as for visual edification.
Condition: Very good impression on laid paper with wide margins preserved. Some mild age toning and faint water staining to the lower edge, outside the image. Verso blank.
Framing tips: A tall vertical frame will present the sheet harmoniously. Use a cream or ivory mat to highlight the fine line work, with a dark wood or ebonized frame for solemnity. A gilt frame may enhance the radiant quality of the Transfiguration scene.
