This refined late 19th-century ornithological chromolithograph depicts a pair of black storks (Ciconia nigra), shown standing at the edge of shallow water beside a low rocky outcrop. One bird is identified as an adult, while the second represents a younger specimen, allowing for a subtle comparison of posture and plumage within the species. The black stork, also known as the European black stork, was far less commonly seen than its white counterpart and therefore held a special fascination for 19th-century naturalists. Good antique condition. Light foxing and mild age-related toning visible, mainly in the margins, consistent with chromolithographs of this period. The image area remains clean and well preserved, with no major tears or losses observed.
Framing tips
Best framed with a wide off-white or light grey mat and a simple black, dark walnut, or natural wood frame. This enhances the contrast between the dark plumage and the pale background and gives the print a classic, museum-style presentation.
