About the Item

Siege of the European Legations Peking 1900 Boxer Rebellion Épinal Print Description This striking French color lithograph depicts the Siege of the European Legations in Peking (Beijing) during the Boxer Rebellion, one of the most dramatic international crises at the turn of the 20th century. Issued by Pellerin Cie of Épinal and dated to 1900, the print illustrates the prolonged assault on the foreign diplomatic quarter between 20 June and 15 August 1900, when European powers, the United States, and Japan defended their legations against Boxer and Qing forces. The composition is dense and highly animated, characteristic of the finest Imagerie d’Épinal battle scenes. At left, European defenders—including soldiers, marines, and armed civilians—are shown entrenched behind improvised barricades, firing rifles and a machine gun from windows and street positions. At right, Chinese forces advance through narrow streets under banners and flags, supported by artillery, amid smoke, explosions, and hand-to-hand fighting. The architectural setting, uniforms, weapons, and insignia are carefully rendered, providing a vivid contemporary visualization of urban warfare during the Boxer Rebellion. Below the image, the extensive original French caption offers a detailed narrative of the events, identifying the Boxers, describing the multinational defenders, and recounting the progression of the siege, casualties, and eventual relief by the allied forces. This text is an integral part of the work, reflecting both the informational and propagandistic role of Épinal prints in shaping public understanding of overseas conflicts. Imagerie d’Épinal prints such as this were intended for broad circulation, yet examples depicting major international events—particularly in China—are now increasingly sought after. This sheet stands out for its ambitious multi-figure composition, strong hand coloring, and clear historical anchoring to one of the defining colonial conflicts of the era. It appeals equally to collectors of military history, Boxer Rebellion material, Chinese-Western encounter imagery, and French popular prints, as well as to interior designers seeking a bold and historically charged wall piece. Condition Good overall condition. Light age toning to the paper and minor handling wear consistent with age. Colors remain vivid and well preserved. Margins intact, text fully legible. No major tears, losses, or restorations observed. Framing tips This print benefits from a substantial presentation. A dark wood or black frame with a wide off-white or pale grey mat will balance the busy scene and enhance legibility. Museum or UV-filtering glass is recommended to protect the original coloring. A generous mat adds visual impact and suits both classic and contemporary interiors. Technique: Color lithograph (Imagerie d’Épinal) Maker: Pellerin Cie, Épinal, France, 1900
