About the Item
Branched Wood Horsetail, Great Water Horsetail and Sweet Cyperus – Triptych, 1873
Description:
This visually striking botanical triptych brings together three distinctive wetland and waterside plant studies, combining strong vertical structure with refined botanical detail. The set includes the Branched Wood Horsetail, the imposing Great Water Horsetail, and a detailed plate illustrating Sweet Cyperus alongside Brown Cyperus and Black Bog-rush. Together, the three prints create a dynamic composition that balances architectural plant forms with lighter, more delicate botanical detail.
Published in 1873 as part of Anne Pratt’s influential botanical works, these engravings reflect the Victorian fascination with Britain’s wetland flora and its remarkable variety of growth forms. Pratt’s illustrations are admired for their accuracy, clarity, and restrained hand colouring, qualities clearly visible in this set. The segmented horsetail stems provide bold vertical rhythm, while the cyperus and bog-rush forms introduce contrast through finer lines and open spacing. The soft green palette, set against warm cream paper, gives the triptych a timeless decorative appeal.
As a ready-made triptych, this set is especially attractive for interior designers and collectors seeking botanical artwork with strong structure and natural elegance. It works beautifully in studies, hallways, stairwells, or contemporary interiors where graphic plant forms and natural history subjects are appreciated.
Condition report:
Moderate age toning with light scattered foxing, consistent with age; images remain clear and visually strong.
Framing tips:
Use matching mats in warm ivory or soft parchment. Frames in dark walnut, black-stained wood, or slim antique-gold profiles will emphasise the vertical lines and botanical contrast.
