About the Item
Title: British and Scottish Costumes – Officers, Guards, and Sailors, c.1845
Description:
This fine hand-colored lithograph, titled “Europe – Angleterre,” comes from *Le Monde en Estampes: Types et Costumes des Principaux Peuples de l’Univers*, published in Paris around 1845–1850 by Amédée Bedelet. The design was drawn by Leloir, lithographed by J. Bocquin, and printed by Lemercier, whose Paris workshop was known for producing some of the most sophisticated lithographs of the 19th century.
This scene vividly depicts the diverse uniforms and attire of Great Britain, focusing on the pride and discipline of its military and naval forces. At the left, a *Gentilhomme écossais en costume national* greets an *Officier Général* and an *Officier des Horse Guards* on a busy port quay. The Scottish gentleman, dressed in a traditional tartan kilt and yellow plaid, complete with feathered bonnet and sporran, stands as a striking embodiment of Highland identity and chivalric heritage. The two officers beside him, in brilliantly detailed uniforms of red and blue with gold embroidery and plumed hats, exemplify the British Empire’s martial elegance during the Victorian era.
Behind them, a line of red-coated guards prepares to embark for service, illustrating the title beneath: *Embarquement de troupes* (Troop embarkation). At the right, two naval figures—a *Midshipman* in formal blue and white uniform and a *Matelot* (sailor) in wide trousers and straw hat—stand ready by a cannon, their ships anchored beyond in a calm harbor scene. The background, populated by rigged masts and the Union Jack fluttering at sea, captures the maritime spirit that defined Britain’s power and global influence.
The composition skillfully balances realism and allegory: while portraying accurate uniforms, it also suggests unity across Britain’s land and sea forces. The detailed drawing and subtle coloring reflect the lithographer’s precision—reds, blues, and golds stand out against the soft gray tones of the harbor and sky.
As part of *Le Monde en Estampes*, this plate embodies both artistic excellence and ethnographic interest, celebrating national pride, costume, and the visual identity of 19th-century Europe.
Condition report: Very good condition with minor foxing and age toning confined to margins. The image itself is clean and bright, with strong hand-coloring and full borders preserved.
Framing tips: This plate displays best with a neutral ivory or pale gray mat and a black or giltwood frame. A dark navy-blue inner mat can further emphasize the vivid uniforms and maritime setting.
