Charles Albert Waltner was born in 1846 in Paris. He was the son of Charles Jules Waltner, an engraver.
He initially devoted himself to painting and attended the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He then turned to the art of engraving with Achille-Louis Martinet and Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. In 1868, he won the Prix de Rome for intaglio engraving. After producing small pieces, he devoted himself to large-scale interpretive engravings of many great masters, including Delacroix, Gainsborough, Henner, Titian, Millet, Monet, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, Velasquez, and others. He became an engraver at the Gazette des Beaux-Arts and then at l'Art from 1873 to 1879. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1882, then an Officer in 1899.
He was a member of the jury and exhibited at the first International Exhibition of Black and White in 1885 at the Pavillon de Flore, and participated as a founder in the reopening of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1890. From 1906 until his death in 1925, he was a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris as head of the etching workshop. In 1908, he was admitted to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863)
Considered the leader of the Romantic school, Eugène Delacroix was born in 1798 into a wealthy family. His mother, Victoire Oeben, was the daughter of Louis XV's cabinetmaker, Jean-François Oeben, and his father, Charles Delacroix, successively held the positions of minister, ambassador, and prefect. It was his uncle, Henri-François Riesener, who allowed him to join the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin in 1815, where he became friends with Théodore Géricault. Delacroix made his debut at the Salon in 1822 with The Barque of Dante, illustrating his taste for Renaissance literature and drama. Moving away from the neoclassicism then in vogue, the young painter looked to Michelangelo and Rubens, converting to chiaroscuro. Always close to current events and also affected by the orientalist wave, in 1824 he presented the Scenes of the Massacres of Scio, in reference to the Greek War of Independence. In 1828, his Death of Sardanapalus caused a scandal among academic critics but received the support of Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas. A concern for rigor emerged with Liberty Leading the People, where dynamism and plastic research took precedence. In 1832, Delacroix traveled to the Orient and described in his famous notebooks his observations and his feeling of an intact Antiquity. The last twenty years of his life were occupied by numerous public commissions for major decors: the Palais Bourbon, the Senate, the Louvre, etc. The painter died in 1863, not without having influenced a large number of artists with his works, whose freedom from convention already foreshadowed Impressionism.
The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous illustrious subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules, and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Antoine Calbet, born August 16, 1860 in Engayrac (Lot-et-Garonne) and died August 21, 1942 in Paris, was a French painter, watercolorist, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier by Édouard-Antoine Marsal (1845-1929), where he learned drawing, this draftsman and illustrator, a painter of nudes and romantic scenes, was sought after during his lifetime. He was then admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He was a member of the Fine Arts admissions jury from 1913 to 1930. He began exhibiting in 1880 and became a member of the Society of French Artists. He was a friend of French President Armand Fallières.

Léopold Flameng, Belgian painter and engraver, was born to French parents. He was a student of Luigi Calamatta and Jean Gigoux. His skill as a burinist brought him to the attention of Charles Blanc, and his collaboration on publications such as L'Artiste and the Gazette des beaux-arts, with Léon Gaucherel, was one of the first engravers for this magazine, which would establish his reputation. Georges Duplessis, art historian, quotes him in a work published in 1869: "Léopold Flameng rose in his time to the rank of master." He received a medal at the 1878 World's Fair.
Known for his etchings after Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Ingres, and Eugène Delacroix, he illustrated several books on Paris as well as numerous literary works by classical and contemporary authors, including Boccaccio, Paul Scarron, Victor Hugo, and François Coppée.
François Flameng was the son of the famous painter and engraver Léopold Flameng. He attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris for his secondary education. Learning to paint from his father, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel, then in those of Pierre Edmond Alexandre Hédouin and Jean-Paul Laurens.
As early as 1870, he produced several reproductions of works by painters Alfred Sisley, Édouard Manet, and Claude Monet for the catalog of the Durand-Ruel Gallery. In 1875, he made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français with his painting "Le Lectern."
He received numerous commissions for portraits, historical scenes, and decorative paintings. His academic style, combining precise drawing and mastery of color, appealed to the bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the time.
During his career, François Flameng was elevated to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor and elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
He left behind a considerable artistic legacy. His works, preserved in the world's greatest museums, bear witness to his exceptional talent and his significant contribution to French art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A pupil of David Joseph Desvachez in Valenciennes and then in Paris of Alexandre Cabanel, Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont, and Jules Jacquet, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1887 onward, receiving an honorable mention in 1893, a 3rd-class medal in 1896, a travel grant in 1897, and a 1st-class medal in 1905, the year he was selected as an hors-competition. He also received an honorable mention at the 1900 World's Fair.
Aimé Nicolas Morot, born on June 16, 1850 in Nancy and died on August 12, 1913 in Dinard, was a French painter and sculptor. He studied at the Nancy School of Drawing and Painting under Claude-Émile Thiéry and Charles Sellier before becoming, through a competitive examination, a student of the painter Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on May 31, 1869.

He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1880 to 1912, where he received a medal of honor for his first participation for The Good Samaritan. As an academic and professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, a frequent exhibitor at the Salon des artistes français in Paris, and a member of the painting jury, Aimé Morot was an influential figure in Parisian art circles, one of the 18 most influential members of the Institut de France.
