About the Item

California Indigenous Dress and Fishing Rafts – Early Ethnographic Engraving, c.1754 This finely engraved ethnographic scene depicts the dress and daily life of the Indigenous inhabitants of California, shown alongside their characteristic fishing methods using rafts. The central image presents a coastal setting in which figures are engaged in fishing activities, while others stand ashore, illustrating clothing, tools, and social interaction as observed by European explorers during the mid-18th century. The print was engraved for Millar’s New Complete and Universal System of Geography, a widely consulted geographical work published in London. Such volumes combined cartography, natural history, and ethnography, offering European readers visual interpretations of distant regions and peoples at a time when California remained largely unknown and only sparsely documented in printed sources. The decorative engraved frame, with floral swags and classical ornaments, reflects the refined publishing standards of mid-18th-century London book production. Within this elegant surround, the scene itself conveys Enlightenment-era curiosity about non-European cultures, focusing on material culture, subsistence practices, and regional environment. While inevitably shaped by European perspectives, engravings such as this form some of the earliest printed visual records of Indigenous life on the Pacific coast of North America. Examples from Millar’s geography are increasingly scarce on the market, particularly in well-preserved impressions with full margins. The combination of ethnographic subject matter, early California interest, and decorative presentation makes this print appealing to collectors of Pacific exploration, early Americana, and historical ethnography, as well as to interior designers seeking visually rich works with strong narrative content. Condition Fair to good antique condition. The paper shows general age-related toning and scattered spotting. There is visible staining and discoloration in the upper margin and along parts of the sheet, as well as light surface wear. The engraved image remains clear and legible, with good contrast. Margins are present. Framing tips This print benefits from conservation framing with a wide, neutral mat to visually separate the image from the toned margins. A simple walnut, dark oak, or ebonized frame complements the period character and highlights the engraved detail, while a lighter natural wood frame can soften the overall appearance for residential interiors. Technique Copper engraving Maker Engraved for John Millar, London, c.1754
