About the Item

Antique View of Campeche Mexico by Van der Aa Allard Leiden Engraving c1720 An early 18th-century engraved view of Campeche, Mexico, published in Leiden by Pieter van der Aa after Carel Allard around 1720. The print shows two local figures standing before a coastal prospect of the fortified city, complete with ships, ramparts and distant hills. Van der Aa’s engravings for his travel collections are admired for their clear linework and their ability to combine regional costume with city views, offering a vivid record of Spanish colonial New Spain. With its wide original margins and strong impression, this sheet is a fine example of early European imagery of Mexico and an attractive piece for collectors of colonial Latin America and global exploration. Condition: Excellent condition; crisp impression, clean paper, wide margins, no tears or repairs. Framing: Best floated on warm off-white museum board in a thin walnut, black hardwood or antiqued gold frame. A shadow-box mount highlights the plate line and margins.
