About the Item

View of the Cape of Good Hope — VOC Ships Table Mountain, Universal Magazine c.1750 Description: This striking 18th-century engraving presents a panoramic view of the Cape of Good Hope, one of the most important maritime crossroads of the early modern world. A fleet of European sailing ships lies anchored in the bay, their presence underscoring the Cape’s crucial role as a reprovisioning station on the long sea route between Europe and Asia. Behind them rise the unmistakable profiles of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head, rendered as monumental natural landmarks framing the harbor and settlement below. The composition is both informative and decorative. The animated sea in the foreground, filled with carefully engraved wave patterns, leads the eye toward the anchored vessels and shoreline activity. A numbered legend identifies key features of the site, including the Castle of Good Hope, smaller fortifications, the anchorage, and the surrounding mountains. In the upper right corner, an inset view shows the Castle of Good Hope in greater detail, emphasizing its strategic and defensive importance to Dutch and later European interests. This plate was engraved for The Universal Magazine, a widely read English periodical that aimed to educate its readership through geography, history, and views of notable places around the world. It was published in London by J. Hinton at the King’s Arms in Newgate Street and dates to the mid-18th century. The Universal Magazine frequently reused and reinterpreted earlier continental sources, and this view is based on earlier Dutch VOC imagery of the Cape, originally developed in the 17th century. The present engraving is therefore a later English interpretation rather than an original Amsterdam print. Such views played an important role in shaping European perceptions of distant trading posts and colonial harbors. While educational in intent, they were also designed to be visually engaging, combining cartographic clarity with dramatic landscape and maritime detail. Today, this engraving is highly appealing to collectors of maritime history, VOC-related material, early views of South Africa and Cape Town, and Universal Magazine prints. Its strong horizontal format and detailed harbor scene also make it an excellent decorative piece for interiors with a global, historical, or nautical focus. Condition report: Good condition for its age. General age-related toning and light surface wear. Central vertical fold as issued, with minor handling marks. No major losses. Please study the image carefully. Framing tips: A dark walnut, ebonized, or black frame enhances the contrast and drama of the engraving. An off-white or light grey mat works well; a slightly wider lower margin suits the historical presentation. Technique: Copper engraving on paper Maker: Anonymous English engraver, published by J. Hinton for The Universal Magazine, London, circa mid-18th century
