This dramatic interior view depicts the Cathedra Petri, or Chair of St Peter, within St Peter’s Basilica. The sculptural and architectural richness of Bernini’s masterpiece fills the composition, illuminated by the glowing window above. Philippe Benoist renders the complexity of the Vatican interior with precision and reverence.
Published in Paris between 1867 and 1869 as part of “Rome dans sa Grandeur,” this plate belongs to the section devoted to Christian Rome. Benoist captures not only the monument itself but also the awe it inspired in contemporary visitors, shown gathered within the vast basilica.
