About the Item

Title: Christ Turns Water into Wine Engraving – John II Wedding at Cana c.1735 Description: This finely detailed antique engraving titled “Christ turneth water into wine” illustrates the first recorded miracle of Jesus at the wedding feast in Cana, as described in John Chapter II. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving captures the dramatic and celebratory atmosphere of this foundational New Testament event. At the foreground, Jesus is shown with a radiant halo, extending his hand in blessing and command towards the stone water jars being filled by the servants. One servant pours water into a large vessel, while another carries a heavy urn, their postures and expressions conveying focused reverence and effort. In the background, the joyous wedding feast unfolds in a grand architectural hall filled with guests seated along an extended banquet table, musicians playing in an elevated gallery, and servants bustling to provide food and drink. The detailed rendering of dishes, jugs, classical columns, drapery, and tiled flooring adds depth and richness to the scene. This engraving is executed with precision using the copper engraving technique, renowned for its fine linear detail, intricate cross-hatching, and shading, enabling artists to depict complex narrative scenes with clarity and drama. Though unsigned, it aligns stylistically with works engraved after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart for English folio Bibles of the early 18th century, where such illustrations served as theological teaching tools and visual devotionals in Protestant households. Collectors value these prints for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into early Protestant visual theology, biblical narrative traditions, and devotional life. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing, mainly in the margins. The plate impression remains strong with engraved details crisp and well preserved. Slight edge wear consistent with age but no major tears or losses. Framing tips: Frame this engraving with a dark wood or black moulding featuring a gold inner edge for a classic ecclesiastical presentation. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tones. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the fine engraving lines and prevent further paper ageing. This piece will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of biblical prints, adding narrative depth, historical resonance, and devotional meaning to any collection.

The Gift of the Magi: An 18th C. Religious Engraving by Vale, After Calmarat
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a very rare early 18th century old master religious themed engraving entitled "Les Mages...Trouverent l'Enfant avec Marie sa Mere, et se prosternant entere ils l'adorent Puis ouvrant leurs tresors ils tuy offrirent pour present de lor de l'encens et de la myrrhe" by S. Vale after Calmaret, published in Paris by Pierre Drevet (1663-1738). The scene depicts the Magi bowing before Jesus, who is held by his mother Mary, and bringing him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to demonstrate their adoration and respect. Winged cherubs fly overhead and a ray of light is focused on the spiritual couple. A cattle stall and buildings are in the background and a crown and scepter are dropped in the foreground, symbolically demonstrating that these nobles place Jesus above their titles and rank. Little is known about the artist Calmarat or the engraver S...
