About the Item
Chromolithograph of Groningen Women in Chintz and Flodder Muts Headdresses, 1932
This vivid hand-colored lithograph is Plate VIII from the 1932 folio The National Costumes of Holland, illustrated by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt, with cultural notes by Alma Oakes. Published in a limited edition of only 500 copies, this rare work documents historical dress across the Netherlands with exceptional visual richness and ethnographic detail. This plate depicts early 19th-century costume as worn by gentlewomen of the Groningen province.
The woman on the right wears an exuberant dress made of finely printed chintz in bold red, blue, and yellow patterns. Her tight bodice, short sleeves, and full jak are made of matching fabric. A red-checked apron adds contrast, while her fichu is of embroidered muslin with tiny dots. She wears white knitted stockings and black leather shoes with silver buckles. Around her neck is a coral necklace fastened at the front with a gold clasp—an accessory typical of northern Dutch provinces. Her headwear includes a narrow oorijzer (headband) and a flodder muts, a laced cap with a longer frill that hangs in soft folds at the back.
To the left, an older woman appears in the costume of a provincial gentlewoman from the 1840s. Her high-crowned poke-bonnet sits atop a layered cap, under which she wears a chintz jacket, a bordered cashmere shawl, and a long dark skirt. Her white cuffs are embroidered with red spots, and she wears black mittens and stout shoes without buckles. She holds a large umbrella in vibrant red and green, typical of the grand accessories favored by older generations of Dutch women.
Although Groningen women abandoned their national dress earlier than their Frisian neighbors, this plate preserves a striking example of their fashion at its most vivid and formal. The balance of fine textiles, structured tailoring, and bold accessories reveals a regional style both elegant and practical.
Technique and condition:
Printed via chromolithography by Vincent, Brooks, Day
Son in London, this plate shows exceptional quality in both color saturation and detail. The print is in excellent condition, with clean margins and no staining, ready for framing or collection.
Framing tips:
We recommend a black or dark wood frame to balance the bold colors and intricate textile patterns. A pale gray or cream mat will help highlight the delicate lace and printed fabrics. A double mat with a subtle red or gold inner edge can echo the coral necklace or the umbrella. Always use UV-protective glass to preserve the artwork.
