Each plate records mythological scenes and classical figures based on ancient Roman reliefs, sculptures, and monuments preserved in prominent European collections. Montfaucon’s work marks the beginning of systematic classical archaeology, presenting antiquity through engraved visual evidence rather than textual description alone.
