About the Item

Classical Marble Statues, Apollo and Nude Figures – Montfaucon Antiquity, 1721 Description: This engraved plate originates from Bernard de Montfaucon’s influential Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, published in London in 1721. The sheet presents a carefully arranged group of celebrated classical statues, combining full-length figures with smaller oval medallion studies. At the center and upper register are idealized nude figures after ancient marble sculptures, including Apollo-type representations, shown in contrapposto poses that emphasize anatomical balance, movement, and classical proportion. Montfaucon’s project aimed to catalogue and interpret the surviving sculptural heritage of antiquity for scholars, artists, and collectors. Rather than presenting isolated decorative images, these engravings functioned as visual reference plates, recording canonical forms of ancient sculpture as they were known in early 18th-century Rome and major European collections such as the Raccolta Maffei. The plate reflects this scholarly intent, with each figure clearly isolated, labeled, and engraved to communicate form and volume. From a decorative perspective, this sheet has strong vertical presence. The dominant standing figures command attention and read almost like architectural sculptures when framed, while the surrounding oval vignettes create rhythm and visual balance. This combination makes the print particularly attractive for interior designers seeking classical gravitas without overwhelming a space. It works especially well in libraries, studies, stairwells, or refined hotel and residential interiors where a single large classical image is desired. The engraving itself is characteristic of early 18th-century book illustration, with subtle tonal gradation and a softer line quality than later academic engravings. This softness enhances the sculptural feel, allowing the figures to appear warm and tactile rather than overly graphic, reinforcing their origin as representations of marble statues. Condition: Good antique condition. Light age toning throughout. Minor surface wear consistent with age. No significant losses or restorations observed. Framing tips: A generous mat is recommended to emphasize the vertical scale of the figures. An off-white, stone, or pale grey mat paired with a dark walnut, blackened wood, or muted gilt frame complements the classical subject beautifully. Works well as a standalone statement piece or paired with another Montfaucon plate for a cohesive classical wall. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Bernard de Montfaucon, France / London edition, 1721
