Pieter Pieterszoon Hein – Dutch Naval Hero, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
Located in Langweer, NL
Pieter Pieterszoon Hein – Dutch Naval Hero, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph Item Description: This finely detailed 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicts Pieter Pieterszoon Hein, one of the most legendary figures of the Dutch Republic’s naval history. Born in 1577 in Delfshaven, Hein gained lasting fame in 1628 when he captured the Spanish treasure fleet near Cuba, securing a massive fortune for the Dutch during the Eighty Years' War. His daring tactics and success made him a national hero and a symbol of Dutch maritime power. Hein is portrayed in full military regalia, standing confidently with a sword in one hand and a plumed hat in the other. Behind him flies a Dutch flag, and at his feet lie silver platters and cannonballs, direct references to his famed capture of Spanish treasure. His expression is composed and commanding, capturing both his strategic brilliance and patriotic legacy. This lithograph was drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. It reflects the pride and drama of 19th-century Dutch historical portraiture, with hand-applied color and strong period detail. Details: - Subject: Pieter Pieterszoon Hein, Dutch admiral and naval hero - Date: Circa 1850 - Technique: Hand-colored lithograph - Artist: Herman ten Kate - Printer: P W van de Weijer, Utrecht - Condition: Good; rich colors and crisp detail with only minor signs of age - Printed title below image: Pieter Pieterszoon Hein Framing Suggestion: Ideal for framing in a dark or black wooden frame with archival-quality matting and UV-protective glass.
