This charming mid-19th century panorama titled Costumes Suisses was published in Zurich by Weinig
Comp., circa 1850–1880. It consists of sixteen connected panels, each printed as a tinted lithograph with delicate hand coloring, depicting Swiss men and women in regional costume. The figures are shown either in their characteristic alpine landscapes or in rustic domestic interiors, offering a vivid record of traditional attire and everyday life in Switzerland during this period.
The lithographs capture a wide variety of regional dress styles, from mountain villages to lakeside towns, highlighting the diversity of Switzerland’s cantonal traditions. Each panel is carefully hand-colored, bringing out details of embroidery, fabric, and accessories. These types of folding panoramas were popular souvenirs for travelers undertaking the “Grand Tour” or visiting Switzerland in the mid-19th century, when interest in folklore, ethnography, and picturesque travel scenes was at its peak.
The panorama measures 4 ¾ x 3 inches (12 x 8 cm) when closed, and unfolds to reveal a continuous sequence of lively costume scenes. The original embossed cloth covers remain intact, with the title and publisher’s imprint gilt-stamped to the upper board. This compact format was designed for portability and easy display, reflecting the period’s fascination with illustrated costume studies and travel mementoes.
Such Swiss costume panoramas are now increasingly scarce, especially complete examples with strong, unfaded hand coloring. They represent not only a valuable record of regional dress but also the 19th-century lithographic art form that made such images widely available to the growing tourist market. This example is particularly bright and attractive, with sharp impressions and fresh colors.
Condition report: Covers show light wear appropriate to age, gilt still clear. The panorama unfolds well, with only minor handling wear. Lithographs remain bright with attractive hand coloring.
Framing tips: Although originally intended as a folding panorama, individual panels or the entire strip can be displayed attractively in a custom frame. A wide ivory or cream mount will emphasize the vivid colors of the hand-coloring, while a darker wood frame will complement the 19th-century character of the piece.
