About the Item
This rare and beautifully detailed etching by Sigmund Lipinsky depicts several of the Greek gods on Mount Olympus, dominated by Zeus and Athena, who are shown standing over a nude Hermes (or Mercury), staff in hand and wings on his cap. Lipinsky was known for his beautifully detailed female nudes, both drawings and prints, so this example featuring the male nude is unusual in his oeuvre. He was related to Giacomo Meyerbeer, the great opera composer, and was given every opportunity to develop his artistic skills, studying with Woldemar Friedrich, Josef Scheurenberg and Anton von Werner. He spent much of his career in Rome, and indeed this print was made in Rome in 1923. The print is on pale brown paper, and is signed and numbered in pencil. Dimensions include matte; visible print is 9.5 inches high by 6 inches wide.

The work is in full Liberty style and depicts a man, Ulysses surrounded by two figures. The famous sorceress Circe appears on the upper left corner and a second female figure is going to stop him. They are into a sea cave and, on the background, we can see the surface of the sea.
