About the Item
The Coup of 18 Brumaire – Napoleon Seizes Power, French History Engraving c.1840
Description:
This dramatic 19th-century French engraving depicts the Coup of 18 Brumaire, one of the most decisive and turbulent moments in the rise of Napoleon. The scene captures the chaos inside the Council of Five Hundred, with figures in animated motion, raised arms, and intense expressions, creating a powerful sense of urgency and political drama. Napoleon stands at the center of the composition, calm yet resolute, anchoring the turmoil around him and giving the image a strong visual and psychological focus.
The engraving is rich in architectural detail and densely populated with figures, making it an engaging and commanding wall piece. Despite the complexity of the scene, the composition remains balanced and highly legible, allowing it to work exceptionally well in interiors where a sense of gravitas, history, and intellectual depth is desired. The monochrome palette and precise engraved lines lend the print a refined, museum-like character, suitable for studies, libraries, offices, and statement walls in both classic and contemporary settings.
Historically, the event shown took place on 9 November 1799 (18 Brumaire, Year VIII), marking the overthrow of the Directory and the beginning of Napoleon’s ascent to supreme power in France. The engraving was produced several decades later as part of the Galerie Historique de Versailles, a grand national project initiated under King Louis-Philippe to commemorate pivotal episodes of French history. Rather than a contemporary eyewitness image, this work reflects the Romantic-era interpretation of Napoleon as a central figure of destiny and authority.
The composition is after a painting by François Bouchot, a leading French historical painter of the 19th century, and was engraved by Frilley for publication by Gavard in Paris. Prints from this series were intended for collectors and institutions and remain highly sought after for their narrative strength, historical importance, and decorative impact. Although part of a larger series illustrating Napoleon’s career, this engraving stands strongly on its own as a complete and compelling image.
Condition:
Good antique condition. Light foxing and age-related toning to the margins, consistent with age. The engraved image is clean and well-preserved, with a clear plate mark visible.
Framing suggestions:
This print benefits from a generous off-white or soft grey mat to balance the dense composition. A black, dark walnut, or ebonized frame enhances contrast and reinforces the dramatic character of the scene.
