About the Item

Das Weltausstellungsgebäude in Wien – The Vienna Exhibition Hall, 1873 A finely hand-colored 19th-century engraving depicting the grand Weltausstellungsgebäude (World Exhibition Hall) in Vienna, constructed for the Wiener Weltausstellung of 1873. This monumental building, also known as the Rotunde, was one of the largest domed structures in the world at the time and a triumph of glass-and-iron architecture. The image presents a lively scene in front of the exhibition grounds, with elegantly dressed visitors strolling across the landscaped gardens. Flags flutter from the roofline, and the immense glass dome, designed by Carl von Hasenauer and built under the direction of engineer Johann Caspar Harkort, dominates the skyline. The central portal is adorned with allegorical sculptures symbolizing Industry and Progress, emphasizing the spirit of modern innovation celebrated at the exhibition. This engraving captures the optimism and grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at its cultural and industrial peak. The 1873 World Exhibition was a major event, intended to rival those of London and Paris, and it showcased technological, artistic, and architectural achievements from around the world. Condition: Excellent impression with rich hand-coloring. Slight age toning and a few faint foxing marks typical for the period, but overall crisp and clean. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: A gilt or walnut frame with a cream mat will enhance the architectural detail and warm tones of the print. Technique: Hand-colored engraving on laid paper Maker: Drawn by W. Wiegand, engraved by J. Löwenthal, Vienna, 1873

After the exhibitions many of the exhibits were selected to be at display in the Technological, Industrial and Sanitary Museum (now the Powerhouse Museum). The Garden Palace...
