About the Item
Pair of Antique Chromolithographs of Roses by Parsons
Willmott, 1914
This pair of large folio chromolithographs comes from Ellen Ann Willmott’s 'The Genus Rosa' (1910–1914), with illustrations by Alfred Parsons (1847–1920). Considered the greatest botanical work on roses of the 20th century, it stands as the modern counterpart to Redouté’s 'Les Roses', providing both an exhaustive botanical study and unmatched visual beauty. We sell this set not with frame or matting board. We sell the prints only.
Ellen Willmott (1858–1934), one of the most influential gardeners of her age, was celebrated for her vast horticultural knowledge and her estate at Warley Place, Essex. With nearly ninety gardeners employed, she curated one of the most extensive living rose collections ever assembled. Her collaboration with Alfred Parsons, himself a horticulturist, painter, and garden designer, produced a series of plates that combined scientific precision with artistic refinement.
These two plates each depict branches of wild roses in bloom. The first shows a vivid crimson blossom with finely serrated foliage, while the second portrays paired red blooms and a delicate bud, capturing the subtle differences in growth and form. The balance between botanical accuracy and artistic grace makes them exceptional examples of early 20th-century chromolithography.
Together, they form a striking decorative pair and a valuable reference for rosarians, garden historians, and collectors of fine botanical art.
Condition report:
Both plates are in good condition, with vibrant colors and crisp detail. Light toning is visible toward the margins, consistent with age. No major tears or repairs. Plate impressions remain strong.
Framing tips:
These plates would look superb when paired side by side in matching frames. Wide ivory or cream mounts will enhance the natural delicacy of the blossoms, while dark wood or gilt frames will add depth and contrast. For a subtle highlight, consider double matting with a fine red or green inner line to echo the tones of the roses.
