About the Item

Durouf Wife’s Channel Balloon Crash – 19th-Century Hand-Coloured Engraving This gripping 19th-century hand-coloured engraving depicts the perilous rescue scene of French aeronaut Jules Durouf and his wife after their balloon crashed into the English Channel. The dramatic composition shows Durouf clinging to the wreckage of the deflated balloon with one arm while supporting his unconscious wife with the other, their vivid red garments contrasting sharply with the swirling blue-green waves. The balloon’s ropes and tattered silk canopy trail into the sea, and a sailing vessel approaches in the distance, offering a glimmer of hope. Images like this were popular in illustrated periodicals of the mid-to-late 19th century, feeding public fascination with ballooning adventures and the inherent risks of aerial travel over open water. Such voyages were daring feats of endurance and navigation, but sudden weather changes and the challenges of landing often ended in disaster. This scene combines the technical detail of a ballooning mishap with the emotional intensity of a maritime rescue. The engraving is finely executed, with delicate line work enriched by hand-applied watercolour, enhancing the drama of the sea and sky. It serves as both a historical document of early aeronautics and a striking display piece for collectors of aviation, maritime, or 19th-century illustrated art. Claude-Jules Duruof, a 19th-century French balloonist, is known for several dramatic flights, including one where he and his wife had to be rescued after their balloon descended into the sea off the English coast. The event is depicted in a well-known lithograph showing their rescue from the sinking basket of the balloon “Le Tricolore.” The exact date of this English Channel incident is not clearly recorded in easily available sources. We know that Duruof made a notable ascent from Calais in 1868 with scientist Gaston Tissandier, but there is no evidence that this flight ended in the Channel. Another documented accident involving Duruof occurred on 1 September 1874 near Norway, not in the Channel. In short, while the rescue scene is well known, the precise day, month, and year when Duruof went down in his balloon in the English Channel remains uncertain in commonly accessible historical records.
