About the Item

Set of Three Double-Scene Biblical Engravings, Pieter Mortier, Amsterdam, ca.1700 This finely engraved biblical set consists of three early-18th-century copper engravings, each sheet containing two narrative scenes, published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam around 1700. Together, the three sheets form a coherent visual cycle of six Old and New Testament episodes, executed in the refined Dutch Baroque style for which Mortier’s press was renowned. Mortier was among the most influential publishers in Amsterdam at the turn of the 18th century, producing high-quality illustrated religious and historical works after leading European models. His engravings are characterized by crisp line work, balanced compositions, and carefully staged biblical drama, intended both for private devotion and for display in educated domestic interiors. The first sheet presents two dramatic narrative scenes set within architectural surroundings. The upper image depicts a moment of emotional intensity and moral conflict, with figures arranged around a central act of compassion or supplication. The lower scene expands into a broader ceremonial setting, showing a public biblical episode within a monumental interior, animated by multiple figures, gestures, and architectural depth. The second sheet focuses on moments of divine teaching and symbolic journey. The upper scene shows Christ addressing a gathered group, his calm authority contrasted with the varied reactions of those around him. Below, a pastoral scene depicts a solitary figure traveling through a landscape, rich in allegorical meaning and executed with a strong sense of movement and spatial recession. The third sheet emphasizes conflict, judgment, and instruction. The upper engraving portrays a dramatic confrontation involving fire and force, with tightly grouped figures and heightened tension. The lower scene shifts to a structured interior, where Christ addresses or instructs an assembly, the composition carefully ordered to guide the viewer’s eye toward the central figure. Across all three sheets, the engravings are unified by their decorative borders, engraved title cartouches, and consistent scale. The balance between intimate moments and large public scenes gives the set strong narrative rhythm and visual cohesion. Complete sets such as this are increasingly difficult to find intact and are especially appealing to collectors of early Dutch religious prints as well as interior designers seeking authentic, museum-quality works with historical depth. Condition Report: Very good condition for early 18th-century engravings. Light age toning and minor scattered spotting consistent with age. Clear plate marks visible. Margins ample and suitable for framing. No major tears or losses observed. Framing Tips: Best presented as a matched set of three. Dark walnut, ebonized wood, or antique black frames with wide ivory or warm off-white mats complement the engraved borders beautifully. Displayed side-by-side in a horizontal row, the set creates a strong scholarly and museum-style presentation.
