About the Item
Dutch Baroque Life of Christ, 3 Double-Scene Biblical Engravings, ca 1700
This impressive Dutch Baroque set consists of three early-18th-century copper engravings, each sheet engraved with two narrative scenes from the Life of Christ, resulting in a total of six finely composed biblical images. The engravings were published in Amsterdam around 1700 by Pieter Mortier, one of the most influential print publishers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Mortier’s religious prints are distinguished by their clarity of engraving, dramatic staging, and strong architectural and landscape settings. Intended for both private devotion and refined domestic display, these works translate key moments from the New Testament into richly detailed visual narratives, combining emotional intensity with classical compositional balance.
The first sheet presents pivotal moments of judgment and moral tension. The upper scene depicts Christ standing before an assembled authority within a monumental interior, surrounded by figures expressing doubt, accusation, and hesitation. The lower scene continues the theme of public confrontation, showing Christ addressing or responding to a gathered crowd, the composition structured around architectural steps and carefully layered figures.
The second sheet focuses on conflict and authority. The upper engraving portrays a dramatic nighttime arrest scene, filled with movement, torches, and tightly grouped figures, emphasizing chaos and betrayal. Below, Christ appears again before rulers or elders in a formal interior, the contrast between calm central figure and animated surrounding crowd reinforcing the narrative tension.
The third sheet balances divine revelation with intimacy. The upper scene shows a heavenly apparition or angelic visitation set in an open landscape, rendered with soft atmospheric depth. The lower scene depicts Christ teaching or revealing himself to followers in a nocturnal or secluded setting, illuminated by lantern light, creating a powerful sense of quiet revelation and spiritual focus.
Across all three sheets, the engravings are unified by their decorative engraved borders, title cartouches, and consistent scale. The tonal harmony and narrative flow make the set particularly effective when displayed together. Complete sets such as this are increasingly scarce and are highly sought after by collectors of early Dutch religious prints as well as interior designers seeking authentic, museum-quality wall art with historical gravitas.
Condition Report: Very good condition for early 18th-century engravings. Light age toning and minor scattered spotting consistent with age. Clear plate marks visible. Margins ample and suitable for framing. No major tears or losses observed.
Framing Tips: Best displayed as a matched set of three vertical works. Dark walnut, ebonized wood, or antique black frames with wide ivory or warm off-white mats emphasize the engraved borders and enhance the Baroque character. Particularly effective when hung side-by-side in a horizontal museum-style arrangement.
