About the Item
Early French Warriors and Nobility, Gaulish to Norman Cavalry, 4-Plate Set, ca. 1860
A powerful and visually unified set of four original 19th-century hand-colored engravings depicting the development of military leadership, warfare, and mounted combat in France from the late Gaulish period through the Norman era. These plates originate from the authoritative French series Costumes civils et militaires des Français à travers les siècles, published in Paris by F. Roy and based on historical texts, archaeological evidence, and earlier scholarly sources.
Note: The work is offered unframed, enabling custom framing to personal or interior preferences.
The set presents a dynamic progression of power and warfare, moving from early Frankish and Roman-influenced Gaulish leaders to medieval feudal and Norman cavalry. Each composition is rendered with exceptional attention to costume, armor, weapons, and heraldic detail, while the restrained backgrounds allow the figures and action to dominate visually.
The four plates included are:
Un chef des Francs
Chief of the Franks
An equestrian Frankish leader shown in full martial regalia, emphasizing the emergence of mounted authority in early medieval France.
Chef gaulois sous la domination romaine
Gaulish chief under Roman rule
A standing figure illustrating the transition from independent Gaulish identity to Roman-influenced military and dress traditions.
Comte partant pour la guerre, suivi de ses vassaux (VIIIe au IXe siècle)
Count departing for war, followed by his vassals (8th to 9th century)
A dramatic narrative scene depicting feudal obligation and early medieval warfare, with armed retainers and shields in motion.
Cavalier normand en 1066
Norman horseman in 1066
A striking depiction of Norman cavalry at the time of the Conquest, associated with the Battle of Hastings and the rise of Norman military dominance.
Together, these four plates form a cohesive and highly decorative ensemble centered on power, leadership, and the evolution of mounted warfare. The mix of standing figures and dynamic equestrian scenes creates strong visual rhythm, making this set particularly well suited for display in studies, libraries, or refined interiors with a historical focus. As a group, the prints read far more strongly than individually, offering both narrative continuity and aesthetic impact.
Condition:
Good antique condition overall. Light age toning and scattered foxing consistent with 19th-century paper. Minor edge wear and occasional soft handling creases, mostly confined to the margins. The images remain clear, vivid, and attractively hand colored. No restorations observed.
Framing suggestions:
Recommended to frame as a coordinated set of four. Dark walnut, ebonized wood, or antique black frames complement the subject matter well. Use generous ivory or warm off-white mats to balance the aged paper tone and enhance the richness of the colors. Museum glass advised.
