About the Item
Éleve de l’École Polytechnique, Imperial Guard Uniform Print, France 1843
This finely executed hand-coloured military print depicts an Élève de l’École Polytechnique, shown in full dress uniform during the Napoleonic era. Although the subject is dated 1812 in the plate, this impression was issued in 1843 as part of a celebrated French series documenting the uniforms of the Imperial Guard and associated elite corps. The École Polytechnique held a unique position within Napoleonic France, functioning both as a premier scientific institution and as a reservoir of technically trained officers who could be mobilised in times of war. Its students were immediately recognisable by their distinctive dark blue uniforms, bicorne-style shakos, and disciplined bearing, all carefully rendered here with great attention to detail.
The figure is shown seated in a moment of quiet study, reading a small book beside a ruined wall, an image that subtly reinforces the intellectual and scientific prestige of the Polytechnique students. In the background, architectural elements and a distant guardhouse situate the scene within a military-academic environment rather than an active battlefield. This contemplative composition distinguishes the plate from more dynamic cavalry or infantry scenes and adds a refined, almost genre-like quality.
The print is after a design by Hippolyte Bellangé, one of the most important French military artists of the 19th century, renowned for his accurate and characterful depictions of Napoleonic soldiers. Bellangé’s work formed the backbone of several influential uniform series issued in the 1830s and 1840s, which helped shape later historical understanding of Imperial French military dress. These later impressions, including this 1843 issue, are prized for their fine engraving, careful hand-colouring, and excellent preservation of line and tone.
This sheet would appeal strongly to collectors of Napoleonic history, French military iconography, and academic or institutional uniforms. It also works exceptionally well as a standalone decorative piece, offering a quieter, more intellectual counterpoint to cavalry or battle scenes from the same period.
Condition report:
Good overall condition. Light age toning to the paper, more noticeable at the outer margins. Minor scattered spots consistent with age. Plate impression clearly visible. Colours remain fresh and well preserved.
Framing tips:
This print presents beautifully in a classic frame with a muted gold or dark walnut finish. A wide off-white or light cream mat enhances the delicacy of the colouring and gives the figure visual space. Museum glass is recommended to protect the hand-colouring and reduce glare.
