About the Item

Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico – Antique Imperial Portrait Engraving, 1867 This 19th-century engraving depicts Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico (1832–1867), a Habsburg archduke who reigned as Emperor of Mexico from 1864 until his execution in 1867. Published in Louis Énault’s L’Amérique centrale et méridionale (Paris, 1867), the engraving was executed by Nargeot and printed by Chardon. The portrait shows Maximilian standing in full regalia, draped in a fur-lined ceremonial cloak with crown and scepter displayed beside him. His military uniform, sword, and composed bearing convey both imperial authority and personal dignity. Behind him, a heavy curtain and classical interior setting reinforce the grandeur of the composition. This image was produced at a time of great political upheaval. Maximilian, installed with French support under Napoleon III, attempted to modernize and stabilize Mexico but faced fierce resistance from republican forces led by Benito Juárez. Captured in 1867, he was executed in Querétaro, becoming a tragic and controversial figure in Mexican history. For European readers of Énault’s volume, the portrait symbolized both the romantic allure and the political turbulence of Mexico in the mid-19th century. Today, the engraving stands as a fascinating historical document, capturing not only the likeness of Maximilian but also the imperial ambitions and conflicts of the period. It appeals strongly to collectors of Mexican history, Habsburg memorabilia, and 19th-century portrait engravings. Condition report: Very good condition with light toning and minor foxing in the margins. Image strong and well-defined. Blank verso. Please review images carefully. Framing tips: A wide ivory or cream mount will emphasize the dignity of the portrait. A gilt frame enhances the regal theme, while a dark wood frame gives it a more sober, historical presence. Double matting with a deep red or dark green inner line would echo imperial colors and add depth to the display. Technique: Engraving Maker: Nargeot (sc.), published in Paris by Chardon, 1867
