About the Item

English Galleons Dutch Vessels, Naval Ship Engravings, Coronelli 1690 This copper-engraved plate presents two detailed ship studies, published in 1690 in Vincenzo Coronelli’s Atlante Veneto. The upper image depicts English galleons under sail, while the lower image shows a Dutch vessel identified as a “Fusta olandese” or related light craft, illustrating contrasting naval and maritime traditions of the period. Coronelli’s engravings focus on hull form, rigging, and sail configuration, offering both descriptive accuracy and visual drama. The English galleons are shown as large, ocean-going warships, reflecting England’s growing naval power in the late 17th century. In contrast, the Dutch vessel below represents a more versatile and maneuverable craft, suited to coastal waters and regional trade. As with other plates from the Atlante Veneto, the images are enclosed within an elaborate decorative frame, giving the sheet strong presence as an independent work of graphic art. Coronelli’s ship engravings were intended to inform as well as to impress, serving readers interested in geography, navigation, and maritime technology. Printed on period paper, the plate survives in fine condition, with both ship scenes clearly and evenly impressed. It stands as a compelling example of late 17th-century European naval illustration and makes an excellent decorative piece for maritime or historical interiors. Condition report: Copper engraving on paper. Fine condition overall, with light age toning consistent with period paper. No major defects noted. Framing tips: Best framed as a complete sheet to retain the visual balance of the two ship studies. A restrained mat and darker frame will emphasize the engraving and the ornate border. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Vincenzo Coronelli, Venice, 1690
