About the Item
Engraving of Pieter Janszoon Kies – Mayor of Haarlem, after Ketel / by Houbraken, c.1750
This finely detailed portrait engraving depicts Pieter Janszoon Kies, Mayor (Burgemeester) of the city of Haarlem. It was engraved by the renowned Dutch portraitist Jacob Houbraken (1698–1780), after a painting by Cornelis Ketel (1548–1616). The original painting belonged to the widow of the Amsterdam mayor Hn. Kh. van de Poll, as noted in the inscription beneath the portrait.
Houbraken was one of the most celebrated Dutch engravers of the 18th century, known for his elegant and expressive portraits of important historical figures. In this print, Kies is shown in formal regent attire, with a stiff ruff collar and a composed, authoritative expression. The oval frame and pedestal inscription underscore his civic status and the solemn dignity associated with Dutch Golden Age governance.
Although likely produced around the mid-18th century, the engraving reflects the stylistic sensibilities of 17th-century Dutch portraiture—sober, refined, and respectful. The print was distributed by an unknown publisher, which adds to its rarity and appeal for collectors.
This engraving is a fine example for collectors interested in Dutch civic history, Haarlem heritage, or the portrait work of Jacob Houbraken. It would also make a superb companion piece to other prints of Dutch regents and burgomasters from the same era.
Condition: Good condition. Strong impression with full plate mark and wide margins. Light toning and small stains in the top corners, possibly from previous mounting. No tears or restorations.
