About the Item
Three original botanical engravings in old handcoloring on hand-laid paper with watermark.
1. Salvia sclarea (Common Name: Clary Sage)
- This engraving features Salvia sclarea, commonly known as Clary Sage. It is a herbaceous perennial native to the Mediterranean Basin and parts of Central Asia. The plant is known for its large, aromatic leaves and striking flower spikes. Clary Sage has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for its soothing properties and as an essential oil in aromatherapy.
2. Lamium album (Common Name: White Dead-Nettle)
- The second engraving shows Lamium album, or White Dead-Nettle, a herbaceous flowering plant native to Europe and Asia. It resembles the stinging nettle but does not have stinging hairs. It is commonly found in hedgerows, roadsides, and woodland edges. Traditionally, it has been used for its medicinal properties, including as a treatment for wounds and respiratory ailments.
3. Sisymbrium nasturtium (Common Name: Watercress)
- The third engraving illustrates *Sisymbrium nasturtium*, commonly known as Watercress. This aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial plant is native to Europe and Asia and is commonly found in slow-moving streams and ponds. Watercress is widely known for its edible leaves, which are rich in vitamins and minerals, and has been used in traditional medicine for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties.
These illustrations are part of the 6th edition of *"Getreue Darstellung und Beschreibung der in der Arzenykunde gebrauchlichen Gewächse"* by Dr. Friedrich Gottlob Hayne, published in 1819, showcasing the medicinal and botanical value of these plants.
