Title: De Bry Engravings of Exotic Encounters – Giant Crabs, Tortoises, Whales, and Cockfights, c.1598 A remarkable set of four original copper engravings from Theodor de Bry’s celebrated series of voyage collections, Petits Voyages (late 16th–early 17th century). These prints vividly capture the European fascination with distant lands and their imagined wonders, illustrating episodes from early Dutch and Portuguese explorations in the Indian Ocean and East Indies. Each engraving is accompanied by Latin text describing the scene in a mix of factual account and fantastical exaggeration—hallmarks of De Bry’s influential travel illustrations. 1. De Grandibus Adeo et Vastis Cancris… This dramatic scene depicts shipwrecked sailors attacked by enormous crabs on a tropical shore. The Latin title translates to “Of Crabs So Large and Monstrous That They Could Mangle and Devour Men.” A group of mariners fights for their lives with oars and shovels, surrounded by monstrous crustaceans. This engraving reflects the European blend of maritime folklore and natural history, transforming ordinary creatures into symbols of peril in unknown seas. 2. Quomodo Hollandi in Mauritii Insula Ingentes Testudines Invenierint Here, Dutch sailors on the island of Mauritius (then newly discovered by the Dutch in 1598) encounter enormous tortoises. Two men are shown riding atop giant shells, while others hunt and butcher the creatures onshore. The engraving’s Latin text describes the abundance and size of these tortoises, some said to carry multiple men. The image also shows a ship in the background and palm trees typical of tropical iconography. 3. Qua Industria Barbari in S. Mariae Insula Cetos Capiant This print shows the inhabitants of Saint Mary’s Island (off Madagascar) hunting large whales or sea monsters. Men in boats hurl harpoons at a massive creature that has washed ashore. The Latin text explains their whaling technique—combining observation, patience, and physical endurance. This depiction reveals both curiosity and a moralizing fascination with indigenous labor and ingenuity. 4. Quo Pacto Javani Gallos Gallinaceos in Pugnam Committant The final engraving portrays Javanese men engaged in a cockfight, a pastime described as both a cultural spectacle and a gambling event. The scene takes place in a tropical landscape with palm trees, pigs, and lizards in the background. De Bry’s text notes the locals’ passion for the sport and the use of sharpened spurs on the roosters’ legs, a detail reflecting both ethnographic interest and moral exoticism. Together, these engravings exemplify Theodor de Bry’s role in shaping the European imagination of the East Indies—merging empirical reports with mythic imagery.
