About the Item
A "Composición #10" BAT lithography by Mexican artist Fernando García Ponce. This print is a classic García Ponce composition with black block brushes and collage elements on top. It is signed and dedicated on the lower right "Para Betsy con cariño García Ponce" ("For Betsy with affection García Ponce").
The lithograph was a gift for American-born Mexican blues singer Betsy Pecanins (1954 - 2016), the daughter of Ana María Pecanins, one of the three sisters behind the ground-breaking Galería Pecanins in Mexico City. Fernando García Ponce was one of the gallery's most important artists in the 1970's.
Fernando García Ponce (1933 - 1987) was a Mexican architect and painter from the Generación de la Ruptura (Breakaway Generation). He was born in Mérida, Yucatán to a Spanish father and a wealthy Yucatán mother. At age 11, he moved to Mexico City. He studied architecture at the Nacional Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He also studied painting under Enrique Climent.
He is known by his collages and abstract paintings with geometric shapes. He was part of a generation of young painters who looked for new creative options in a Muralism dominated context. He was aware of the different art scenes in Europe and was a key factor in the Mexican plastic art's transformation during the second half of the 20th Century.
