Fontana dell’Acqua Paolina, Rome – Antique Panoramic Print, 1869 This is an original 19th-century antique tinted lithograph depicting the Fontana dell’Acqua Paolina on Rome’s Janiculum Hill, published in Paris in 1869 and not a later reproduction. This elegant tinted lithograph depicts the Fontana dell’Acqua Paolina, one of Rome’s most monumental fountains, set high on the Janiculum Hill. The composition captures the fountain’s imposing architectural façade with water cascading into its basins, while figures gather along the terrace to admire the panoramic view across the city. In the distance, Rome unfolds under a luminous sky, reinforcing the elevated vantage point of this celebrated site. Created by Philippe Benoist and published in Paris between 1867 and 1869, this work forms part of the ambitious series Rome dans sa Grandeur, a comprehensive visual portrait of Rome at the end of the Papal era. Benoist’s approach combines architectural accuracy with a painterly sensitivity to atmosphere, enhanced by delicate tinting that softens the stonework and sky. The Fontana Paolina, also known as Il Fontanone, symbolized papal power and engineering prowess, and this image reflects its role as both monument and social gathering place.
