About the Item
Elegant group of four stipple engravings (stipple) depicting winged cherubs in various sentimental and playful poses, suspended in the clouds. Each print bears a title in French that, read in sequence, outlines a small narrative about the game of love:
• Je le tiens - "I got you," the love conquest
• Tu ne m'échapperas plus - "You won't escape me anymore," the desire that holds back
• La fuite - "The Escape," love that eludes
• Le Diablotin - "The little devil," the mischief of temptation
The refinement of stippling restores softness to volumes and luminous complexions, typical of French production between Neoclassicism and Romanticism. Original editorial directions appear at the bottom:
"In Paris, chez Jean, Rue St. Jean de Beauvais, No. 10"
and "Gravé par Castel"
The works are mounted within modern gilded pastille frames, made in imitation of contemporary models, with blue passepartouts that enhance the black and white of the graphics.
